Culture Night- The Moon Goes Round and Round

September 19, 2025 @ 4:00pm - 10:00pm

A curated night of events to celebrate WB Yeats’ love of the moon – in a diverse and fun way – for all ages.

This is an inclusive programme, celebrating contemporary culture, including a wide variety of artistes and rooted in the wider works of WB Yeats and his time in history, allowing us to animate this cultural institution in an engaging and entertaining way.

From 4–6pm, children can join the Black Minnaloushe Drawing Workshops with artist Rebecca Massey, exploring the moon’s phases and creating personalised ink drawings of Yeats’ famous cat beneath the full moon (with a copy of The Cat & the Moon to take home).

At 5–6pm and 8–9pm, enjoy a rehearsed reading of Lady Gregory’s powerful 1907 one-act play The Rising of the Moon, first staged at the Abbey Theatre, delving into Irish nationalism and identity.

6–7pm, local drama students bring moon-themed poetry to the streets of Sligo, sharing short recitals and handing out printed verses.

From 6–8pm, watch Georges Méliès’ groundbreaking 1902 short film Le Voyage de la Lune (with commentary from his granddaughter), a classic of early cinema.

The night ends with Night Moon Music (9–10pm) – a live, moon-inspired set by local producers Magnata in the Oak Moon Café, where moon-themed treats and drinks are served throughout the evening.

This programme is curated by Susan O’Keeffe, Director, Yeats Society Sligo.
